Contributions to My Learning Community

Self-Assessment Score: 95

Throughout this course, I have actively contributed to my learning community by engaging in discussions, revising my work based on instructor feedback, and connecting course concepts to my ongoing innovation initiative, STEP – The Surgical Technology Educators Program. After reviewing the self-assessment marking guide and reflecting on my participation throughout the course, I believe a score of 95 accurately reflects the quality of my engagement, my contributions to the learning community, and the areas where I could have improved my participation.

One of the primary ways I contributed to the learning community was through active participation in the discussion forums. Because this course did not include structured group work or assigned base groups, the discussion boards served as the primary space for collaboration and idea sharing. I participated in all discussions and consistently engaged with my classmates’ ideas by responding thoughtfully and extending the conversation when possible. Rather than simply agreeing with others’ perspectives, I often connected their ideas to my professional experiences in surgical technology education or asked questions that encouraged deeper reflection. These exchanges helped create a collaborative environment where classmates could learn from each other’s professional backgrounds and educational contexts.

My professional role as the Program Director of a surgical technology program influenced many of the perspectives I shared throughout the course. Because my background is rooted in allied health education rather than traditional K–12 education, I frequently approached discussions by considering how the course concepts apply to healthcare education and to professionals transitioning from clinical practice into teaching roles. This perspective allowed me to contribute practical examples of leadership challenges, instructional design considerations, and faculty development needs that exist within healthcare education programs. Sharing these insights helped expand the conversation beyond traditional classroom contexts and demonstrated how the ideas explored in this course can be applied across multiple educational environments.

A central theme throughout my coursework was the continued development of my innovation initiative, STEP. Many of the assignments and reflections throughout the course connected directly to this work. The STEP initiative is designed to address the lack of structured onboarding and professional development for surgical technology educators who transition from clinical practice into academic roles. By grounding my coursework in this innovation initiative, I was able to move beyond theoretical responses and instead explore how course concepts can inform real change within my profession.

Several artifacts from this course demonstrate how my thinking and leadership development evolved throughout the learning process. One example is my COVA Reflection, where I examined how the principles of choice, ownership, voice, and authentic learning influenced the design of my innovation initiative and my approach to leadership within my program. This reflection helped me think more intentionally about how educators learn best and how professional development initiatives can be designed to empower participants rather than simply deliver information.

Another important component of my work during this course involved updating and expanding my ePortfolio Updates, which document the development of my innovation project and the learning artifacts created throughout the program. Maintaining and revising these pages required me to continually reflect on how the assignments from this course fit into the larger structure of my innovation plan and my growth as an educational leader.

In addition, my Innovation Journey Reflection (Synthesis of the Program) allowed me to step back and examine the broader learning process that has taken place throughout the Applied Digital Learning program. This reflection required me to analyze what worked well throughout my innovation work, identify areas for improvement, and consider how my leadership mindset has evolved as a result of the program. Writing this synthesis helped me recognize how the ideas explored in multiple courses connect to the long-term development of the STEP initiative.

Another artifact that reflects my contributions to the learning community is my Visual Communication Component – “An Invitation to Transform Surgical Technology Education” Video. This visual component was designed to communicate the purpose and vision of the STEP initiative in a more engaging and accessible format. Creating this video required me to translate research, leadership concepts, and implementation ideas into a format that could reach a broader audience. This process reinforced the importance of communicating innovation initiatives in ways that are both informative and compelling for stakeholders.

Throughout the course, I consistently revised assignments when feedback was provided and worked to strengthen the clarity and alignment of my work with the course expectations. Rather than viewing revisions as corrections, I approached them as opportunities to refine my thinking and strengthen the development of my innovation initiative. This iterative process helped deepen my understanding of how leadership, instructional design, and innovation intersect in educational environments.

Although I am confident in the quality of my participation and contributions, there are areas where I could have improved. Due to the demands of my professional responsibilities and family obligations, I was not able to attend every synchronous class meeting. While I remained engaged through the course readings, assignments, and discussion forums, participating in all live sessions would have allowed for additional real-time interaction with both the instructor and my classmates. This is one of the reasons I selected a score of 95 rather than a higher score.

Overall, I believe my contributions demonstrate consistent engagement, thoughtful reflection, and meaningful application of course concepts to a real educational innovation initiative. This course allowed me to continue refining the STEP initiative while strengthening my understanding of leadership, collaboration, and innovation in digital learning environments. Participating in discussions with classmates and reflecting on my own work helped reinforce the importance of professional learning communities in supporting both personal growth and meaningful educational change.
